After becoming Zone Champions earlier in the Term 2, the under 15 boys Soccer team headed off to Penrith on Thursday the 2nd of August for the State Soccer Championships.
It was a long, tough day with 3 round robin matches, followed by a semi final and then a final.
After playing extremely well all day, William Carey found themselves in the final against Pacific Hills Christian School.
It was a fantastic final played with great skill and teamwork. William Carey took an early lead 1-0 and that score looked like it would be the winning result. However, sport often throws in a surprising or unexpected finish and this day was no exception. With about 2 minutes left in normal time, a very close call saw Pacific Hills awarded a penalty in the box which saw them level the score at 1-1 with about 1 minute to play. Unbelievably Pacific Hills were awarded another penalty for an accidental handball in the box with no time remaining at all. A successful penalty would have meant a cruel loss to a William Carey team that had dominated the final and the whole day. However, Joshua Panetta (Goal Keeper) miraculously saved the penalty which allowed the WCCS boys into a penalty shootout to decide who would be State Champions.
The William Carey boys calmly executed their penalty shots and it came down to the last Pacific Hills player to convert his spot kick. Joshua Panetta again saved the day with a brilliant diving save that saw the William Carey boys run to him in jubilation as State Champions.
It was a magnificent team effort throughout the whole day and they were rightly crowned State Soccer Champions for 2012.
Congratulations to all the boys on a fine achievement!
