Term 2 Week 10

Last week of Term 2!

Yesterday, Fast Football was a blur of red, blue, green, yellow and orange tops. Year One had a fantastic time with many goals being scored during the quick games.

It has been a very exciting term, learning about The Past in The Present and Spot the Difference – the changes when heating and cooling certain foods. 1S have been developing their skills and understanding in History and will embark on Geography next term, as we explore places in the unit ‘Let’s Play!’. This includes our excursion on Friday 5th August to the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan.

Students have been asked to collect photos of parks during their travels in the holidays and to bring them to school next term.

Science and Technology

The students were given- elastic bands, pipe cleaners, crepe paper and a streamer.

1S then posed some testable questions:

What can we do to an elastic band to change it?

How can we change a Pipe cleaner?

How to make another shape?

What can we use with these objects to change them?

Which of these changes are reversible?

Here is 1S at work!

These are the results: To change the object the students – cut, knotted, curled, twisted, turned, coiled, pushed, poked, ripped, folded and looped.

The conclusion was that on an object that was knotted, curled, twisted, turned, coiled, pushed, folded or looped was reversible. Those that were cut, poked or ripped were non reversible.

Term 2 Week 9

Last week the students were learning about 2D shapes.  In Computers, they used a geoboard site to use 2D to represent a great variety of images. This they accessed through Google Classroom. These are photographs of their designs. There were three baseboards to choose from – circle, square and rectangle. Very intricate and colourful result 1S!

Term 2 Week 7

1S have been exploring how texts and visual texts represent different cultures.  They made their own puppets for the Aboriginal Dreamtime story of Tiddalik the Frog. They drew background for the two scenes on the Promethean board. One student used an iPad to made a video of some students performing Tiddalik as a puppet show. Hope you enjoys their first attempt. Term 2 Week 4

Now in its 17th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school.

The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 20 May 2016

This event helps raise awareness of Road Safety recommendations that:

  • Children up to eight years old should hold an adult’s hand on the footpath, in the car park, or when crossing the road; an adult is defined as a parent, caregiver, grandparent, sibling in high school or older, other relative or neighbour, or other adult as advised by the child’s parents/carers
  • Children up to ten years old should be actively supervised in the traffic environment and should hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road

At WCCS, we will be speaking to our K-2 students on Friday about Road Safety. Parents are encouraged also to have a conversation about Road Safety with their children to support this message, and , if possible, walk with their children either to or from school on Friday

Spaghetti Tower

IMG_0340 IMG_0342 IMG_0343 IMG_0344 IMG_0345 IMG_0336 IMG_0337 IMG_0338 IMG_0339 It is not as easy as it looks. 1S decided that uncooked spaghetti is the best option (rather than cooked spaghetti) for building spaghetti towers. The marshmallows can get sticky as they warm up with handling. What questions can be posed from building towers?

Success with patience, persistence and care! Well done 1S!

Term 1 Week 9

Do Spiny Leaf Insects have wings?

1S raised that question and before we could research that question, one of them took to the air, displaying its wings.   It should be said his wings!

More excitement yesterday – the female moulted and came out of her old skin, a larger new body.  Later she ate her old skin!

Look closely and you will see the cream coloured skin that the spiny leaf insect has shed.

Hoping you have a blessed Easter!
